Some Spiritual and Psychological
Responsibility Issues in Giving and Receiving What's the responsibility that you take on as a Reader or a Client? Here are a few thing you need to be aware of, to make sure that you have a positive experience when getting or giving a Reading. There are a lot of
“Readers” out there… Some are competent, serious students of a spiritual path,
trying to use their awareness to help others to empower themselves. Some are
well meaning, but inept, “counselors”. But there are the others. Some do it
for the “power” of telling someone what to do. Some do it for the money.
Other people will pick up a deck of cards or take an astrology class, find
that they have some aptitude and then go out and set themselves up in business
giving Readings! It doesn’t matter how “psychic” a person is --- if they have
no clarity, their ability may be entertaining, but is virtually useless. The psychic realms are fascinating, but will be a dead end for all involved, IF the phenomena is your only interest. If your interest in the ‘other realms’ leads you closer to God and closer to developing an ability to give and receive love, then your interest is in spiritual, rather than psychic development. Your decision to be a Reader or not… or to consult a Reader or not is a personal one. And that is not the focus of this article. It’s a discussion best left for another time. The core of this piece is the accountability and responsibility that a Reader has in giving the Reading and the client has when reviewing and considering the information in the Reading. Responsibility is a major issue when giving or receiving a Reading. When you give a Reading, you have a duty to be careful of everything that you say to your client. Obviously many Readers know this already, but here are a few things to consider that you may not be aware of. One of the first things that you need to understand, whether you are getting or giving a Reading, is that the person who is receiving it is in an altered state of mind before, during and immediately after the Reading. Clients are often in a state of high anxiety when they come in to see a psychic. Many people will only go to see a Reader if they are having a problem to begin with. Even if that is not the case, the client is usually filled with the anticipation of the Reading. Either way, the heightened emotions can cause the client to enter an altered state. Any intense emotional state will cause this change, not just because they are about to receive a Reading. The client is then open to what you say in a way that they would not normally be open. Every word that a person hears in an altered state is approximately 50 to 100 times more powerful than when heard in a normal waking state! Think of that. In this case, every word said to a person becomes extremely important. Expert con artists know this and use it to influence their quarry. They make sure that their intended victim is in an altered state by doing something to excite or upset them. The body responds to “good” stress and “bad” stress in the same way, physiologically. The body doesn’t know if you are in an anxious condition because you are getting married or because you are getting a divorce. It simply reacts to any intense emotional situation with the appropriate system responses. When we are having this “flight or fight” reaction, the mind become very focused and takes in many more details than it would during a normal state. As a Reader, our words can have a profound effect on someone, at any time, but this is even more true when a person is so open and so altered. Some people think that an altered state, whatever that is, is something weird and scary - a rare occurrence. When was the last time you were in an altered state? It is not just when you get upset, nervous or excited. It happens whenever our senses are focused on something, (whether or not this is something pleasant) and some or all of your senses are involved. Everyone goes into an altered state at least two times a day: when going to sleep and when waking. Research shows that many people go into these states about 50 (or more) times a day! For example, why does someone have a favorite brand of detergent? Actually, most detergents work with about the same degree of success. Researchers have found that most people have a favorite brand because they heard about it on TV. The maker of the product used the knowledge of these altered states to engage one or more of your senses, to help cement the feeling that their particular soap (or whatever they are selling) is better. Most people get into an altered state very quickly while watching TV! How about when you go to a Doctor. It is common to hang on every word the doctor says to you. Are we in an altered state? You bet we are! It’s also the norm for a
person to hang on every word a Reader says to them, with great anticipation.
If the Reader is nervous, then he or she is also in an altered State. This could
help or hinder them, depending on their abilities to detach and stay clear. There are even more things to consider in this area of responsibility. Spiritually, whenever you do a Reading for someone, you are taking the chance that you will share their Karma. This may not sound very attractive to you, and you may wish that this weren’t possible. But it is possible. This is not said to scare anyone. It is said to remind you that when you put out your “shingle” and advertise that you are a ‘Reader’ you imply that you have some ability to receive insight into a problem; that you have some way of getting information that will help the client - and that you can help them in some way. You bear a direct responsibility for every word said, and to some degree, for how the person takes what is said, depending on your intent. Do you have the skills necessary to help a person deal with the issues that come up for them? Or are they left to go home and work it out for themselves? Did you set aside your ego, or did you have a great time showing someone how wise and psychic you are? As a responsible Reader, we each need to be very careful to drop our own attachments and / or preconceived notions. There is a need to set aside the ego and to come from a place of unconditional love for the Soul sitting across from you. That Soul is going through their own journey home to God, and doing the best job of it that they can do, just as you are. Even when one sees something coming up for the client, there is always a need to explain to them and to remind them about their own free will in how they approach the situation. A Reading is a probability, not a certainty. It is important to be honest, but there are Readers who are very psychic and are able to “open the client up like a can opener.” But, again, if they have nothing in place to help the person begin to deal with the feelings and issues that they have brought out into the open, is that responsible? There is no doubt that this Reader has a powerful psychic ability, but are they spiritual? Are they kind? On the other hand, there is the responsibility that the client who asks for a Reading must bear. Most Readers have probably had a client come to them who is about to do something that they know could turn their lives upside down, and they want to have someone validate it for them. Anything the Reader says is fitted into their own preconceived ideas of what they want to hear. That's the Client's responsibility. For instance, a woman, who was thinking seriously about having an extramarital affair went to a psychic. She was looking for and hoping to find someone to condone her actions by telling her something to “absolve” her of her responsibility. She wanted to hear that it was “fate”, and that the strong Karmic connection made the contemplated affair “an inevitability.” She wanted someone to tell her that the connection was so strong between them that it was okay to walk away from her family to play the scene out. It’s not anyone’s job to judge what this woman does, I’m not implying that. But is it responsible to tell her “full speed ahead?” It is up to her what she decides to do. The Reader is not responsible for her decision unless he or she inserts themselves into the picture by trying to influence her. Some Readers could not resist the urge to give advice on this subject! A spiritually oriented Reader will back his or her ego out of the equation and will give her some things to think about on both sides of the coin, with the intent of helping her to make an informed, balanced decision. That Reader will also take some time listen to the client. Just being there to listen, without trying to impress the client as to how much the Reader knows and how ‘wise’ the Reader is, might be the most appropriate thing a Reader could do in a lot of situations. Being responsible can include resisting the urge to ‘fix’ everything. Not everything can be ‘fixed’ - or needs to be. Recently, a fairly
well-known Psychic told me that she told a Client “Well, I can see that you will
meet someone within the next two years and when you do, you will feel such a
connection that you must leave everything in your life and go with them,
even though no one around you will understand.” If it comes to pass, did it happen because it was “meant to” or because the Reader gave such a strong suggestion for it to happen? Or is it a mixture of the two? Who knows? But would you want to be that Reader… or that Client? Let’s suppose that you were the person who went to this Reader. Suppose you were going through a period of time in your marriage where you didn’t feel as close to your spouse as you used to. During this period of dissatisfaction you meet someone that you do have a Karmic connection to. There is a connection between you because of the Karma. You remember the Reader’s prediction, and it seems to fit. I’ll leave it up to you what could well happen next. Where is the client’s responsibility in this situation? The client needs to take responsibility for their actions. They need to weigh the consequences of their actions very carefully and not base everything on some Reading they received - or use it as an excuse to do something they wanted to do anyway... No matter what the Reading said might happen, you have the Free Will - and a brain to figure out whether it’s a positive move to do - or not do - what was suggested. Maybe the Reading predicted the strong possibility that this kind of energy was going to enter your life, but you can decide what the best thing for you when it does. Yes, the circumstance could come about, but it’s your choice how to act upon it. All Readings are based on
probabilities. Only probabilities. That means that whatever the Reader “sees”
for you, will be the most probable events for that moment in time. That doesn’t
mean that anything is set in concrete. In fact, one of the most useful things
that could come from a Reading is the knowledge of what might happen, if
you do nothing to change your behavior or circumstances. If you like what is
coming down the road at you, that’s great - leave things alone. If what a Reader says to you doesn’t ring true, don’t listen to them. Know that the psychic Reader is just a person and can be wrong. No one can be right every time. Use your common sense. Only you have the power to change your life, no one can influence you, unless you allow them to do so. It’s all up to you. Understand that you are going to be in an altered state when you receive a Reading and allow for that. A good Reader will know this, allow for this, and be gentle, kind and loving. This discussion and the examples could go on and on. Perhaps it comes down to this: a Reading is a shared responsibility between the Reader and Client. Consider this well, before you start doing Readings and / or before going to a Reader for your answers.
